Okay, I promise this one will be short. There’s no theme or anything to worry about, just a couple of pleasant things to look at before I go on holiday, so hopefully it will be a nice break for us both. Maybe I’ll tell you about my trip when I get back, will have to see if it’s exciting or interesting enough first.
Anyway, you’ll look after the kiosk for me while I’m gone, won’t you?
This was a recent (and rare, but he’s a good egg so he got away with it) private commission of which the brief was; ‘people doing do strange things with musical instruments’. This was the result, and obviously I couldn’t resist a nice bit of clear water and few fish too.
The Book Is Here!
So, I guess the most important thing that’s happened recently is that my book has finally arrived in physical form, and I have to say, it’s looking rather handsome! It’s always a nerve-wracking experience getting anything back from the printer, as you can plan and design as much as humanly possible, but there is no way of actually know whether it’s all come together until it’s in your hands.
Big thanks to everyone at Avery Hill Publishing, particularly Kat Chapman who oversees all the printing with a patience and clarity that I simply do not possess. The phenomenal (mad) success of the Kickstarter campaign meant that we got to really up the production, so I redesigned it to have the yellow material hardcover with hot foil graphics, and I’m very happy with how it all works together with the dustjacket.
Despite the relief that it’s looking great, the real concern is what you will all make of it. Of course, that is completely out of my control, but my only scrap of hope is that those who have read it, have said some very nice things indeed.
For those who want to make their own mind, then you’ll just have to wait and read it! If you backed it on Kickstarter (Thank you! You’re responsible for the extra lovely production) it will be sent your way next month. If you missed out, you can preorder it right HERE. And finally, if you want to buy a copy, meet me in person, get it signed AND have a drink, then you should come along to the official launch party at Gosh! Comics in London. All the details are below and it will be lovely to see you all there.
Underwater Animation.
Here's a nice thing. A small French animation studio made this cool animation of one of my illustrations.
All movement graphics are a bit beyond my capabilities, so when I see it done well it feels like a magic trick. They took the isometric cutaway of an underwater research station I did and brought it to life. You can check out the studio, What About Motion? HERE.
Right, I need to go a pack now and decide which (if any) art supplies I’ll take. As previously discussed, the irony of being an illustrator means that being a holiday sketcher is often not a fun as it sounds...but don’t worry, I’m taking my trusty Olympus Trip 35 too, so I think we’ll be alright.
In the meantime, look after yourselves and the kiosk. I want to see those out of out-of-date pistachio nuts gone and few coins in the till by the time I get back. And if you get any moment of sun or solace, be sure to take full advantage, you never know when you’ll next get the chance.
See you on the other side.
