Damn! What can I say but Damn! Thanks for the information. I do love art and comics. Your work speaks for itself. You know the craft. You respect the craft. You show the craft. You are the craft. Thanks for the links.
That illustration for the New Yorker is a thing of rare beauty! Beautiful. And the Hugo Pratt panel is one of my favourites from the entire Corto Maltese collection. There is something about it that is indelible.
Beautiful! I first really discovered a graphic artist when I read Christoph Niemann’s tribute to Maurice Sendak. - Actually, that’s not entirely true; I had previously read and loved other graphic novels, including Persepolis, Maus, and a number of others, but with Niemann, things finally clicked for me (specific artist, specific style, etc.). Your piece has done something very similar: establishing associations between specific artists and their work, including your own. Am pleased to note be a subscriber!
The lines of the gull’s wings, I agree, wonderful! Also, your perspective card showing the whale beneath the water. And the friendship of the lovers in the opening image. It’s as if they were having a good conversation and then it sort of happened naturally in the middle of the conversation wherever they were.
if i could heart this multiple times in a row, i most certainly would. This post was something else, but as so,some who enjoys illustration and comics, I absolutely loved the message. thank you for sharing!
‘A Resting Place’ cover has to be one of the most memorable I have ever seen and I say this as an 80 year old who has reviewed a lot of books. I think I might just buy the book for the cover!🐰
I happen to be giving my paperbagstories booklets a makeover and will acknowledge you if I go with a new cover design which draws on your Resting Place cover. I am 80 and print my booklets for fellow customers at the bakery which inspired paperbagstories to read if they are interested. Keep up the good work.🐰
Not subscribing -but loving what you wrote and loving a graphic man - learning thru him and at one time with him by watching the ways he heals w/graphics a little like what you explained as physical and what can be discovered as work 💕🔑
Amazing! And it was totally the title that ~drew~ me in! 😜
Ha. Thank you, Christina!

Thank you, Rosie!

Wow, I was really expecting something else. The substack is really great too, though.
Love this, and I just bought myself your books for Christmas!
Ah, thank you, Russ! Really hope you enjoy them.
talk about click-bait
Lmao, btw cool illustration ✨
Your illustrations are great! Please produce more content like this. I’ve been scrolling my feed for indie content like yours and wew I found you!!
Welcome! And, thank you.
beautiful works and what a wonderful read this was
i do wonder about things that are strictly physical
we will always have the raw files for our photos, illustrations, writings and whatnots digitally
but let’s say a finished sketchbook or a print, objects etc etc
the material form makes me overtly attached to it but also physically detached
in that i would tuck it away, even forget about it, all in the name of preservation
maybe the risk of things breaking, fading, or getting lost makes it valuable and
the rediscovery of *things* makes it even more valuable
and i thank you for the food for thought
Some beautiful work - very impressed.
Thanks!
